Infection control legionella treatment
In community environments and healthcare facilities, the water distributed through a system is always checked and analysed periodically by the water authority. However, poor design of the distribution system, possible stagnation in tanks and pipes, or the presence of sediment and biofilm, can be risk factors for the proliferation of bacterial colonies, in particular Legionella pneumophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia Coli, etc. The filters, installed at the final water points (taps, showers, etc.), guarantee pure and, in some cases, sterile water and immediate safety for the users.
Designed to meet the growing demand for membranes that provide broad spectrum filtration for water and aqueous solutions, Medica's medical grade infection control filters are available with ultrafiltration (Medisulfone®) and microfiltration (Versatile-PES®) membranes. The technical superiority of these membranes lies in their structure:
- The Versatile-PES® membrane has a microporous structure, with a pore size of 0.15 μm, providing effective protection against bacterial contamination; however, pore distribution (number of pores/surface area unit) ensures a large filtering surface area with high permeability, resulting in a high flow rate throughout the life of the filter, tested to ensure at least 92 days of use before replacement according to protocol
- Where the use of the filter instead requires broader spectrum water purification, the Medisulfone® membrane offers excellent performance in the purification of aqueous solutions from bacteria, viruses and endotoxins due to its microporous structure with a much smaller pore size of 0.005 μm.
- The smaller filtering surface with lower permeability results in a lower flow rate and filter life tested to ensure at least 35 days of use before replacement according to protocol.
Both membranes therefore provide an excellent solution for Legionella, Pseudomonas, fungi and other potentially harmful pathogens.
Medica has developed a product line for point-of-use filtration with both Medisulfone® and Versatile-PES® membranes, which includes sink/basin filter with aerator which is also suitable for bathtubs and bidets (MediaPure SSU / SSU3 TP SINK), sink/basin filter with spray head for patient showers, pre-op rooms, wall-mounted showers (MediaPure SSU / SSU3TP RAIN), shower head filter (MediaPure SSU / SSU3SH) and, finally, an in-line filter (MediaPure SSU / SSU3 IL) suitable even for birth pools.
Medica's entire range of point-of-use filters offer higher quality and performance than the majority of alternative solutions on the market, particularly in terms of bacterial retention (11 LRV).
In the case of filters with Versatile-PES® membranes, the service life (3 months) also sets them apart from the competition, which rarely claims a service life of more than 60 days.
