Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine that studies, diagnoses and treats the organs that make up thedigestive system. 

The conditions most commonly treated by gastroenterologists are functional and inflammatory diseases of both the upper tract (oesophagus and stomach) and of the lower tract (intestine and colon-rectum), such as gastrointestinal motility , which is the body's ability to move food through the digestive system. A sedentary lifestyle, an unhealthy diet or certain diseases can impair its functionality.
